Pontil Scar On Glass Pitcher

    Have you seen such pontil? It is sticking out almost 1/2".

    Yup. It's known as a broken pontil.

    Whenever I see these very rough pontils, I always think inexpensive Mexican glass for the porch and deck.

    Thanks for the replies. I've seen broken pontil scars but not such long protrusion.
    So, you can't see rough pontil marks on old American glass?

    I suppose you can, but I haven't ever seen one this rough on antique glass. That's just my experience. By very rough I would define that as rough enough to cut your finger and a pontil that sticks out too far like this one.

    When blown glass was stuck up on a rod to do additiional work such as adding a handle the "scar" was created when the rod and item were separated. Cheap production glass had the protrusion which was often left alone if the item set flat. Higher quality wold have additional work done on the scar. Sometime they look more like a "cut-shut" pigtail.
