Pointed knife or blade?

This little retractable blade was in an old tool box for guns. I was just wondering if it was used for anything special or how old ect it was? It has a nice varnish finish and pointed blade. Any thoughts?

I've seen a couple of those before. Usually mixed in with woodworking tools. They look turn of the century.

 

Some type of keyhole blade?

It reminds me of some sort of (woodworking) scribing tool that would be used on conjunction with a level/straightedge/compass/template, etc.

 

You may want to post better pix of end opposite the blade because that part has a complex shape that tells me it was made to fit into something else, some other piece of hardware and not just someone's hand. Also IMO the design of the retraction feature where you have to press the button down against a spring to unlock and slide the blade puts it well into the 20th C.

Thanks, helps somewhat, although it is hard to tell the shape of the internal recess from that angle.

 

The brass plate on top has two steel screws in it and the top of a smaller steel screw or shaft is visible. I can't see inside the thing but I'm guessing that the small steel thing is a vertical shaft whose job is to provide something for whatever is inserted in the slot to lock onto so the two parts won't come apart until a release button on the missing part is pressed. R U sure the other part isn't in that box?

 

I'm seeing it as some sort of sliding bevel marking knife combination missing the bevel end

Aha! After all the moving it around it fell open and look whats inside. Now what do you think it is? How old ? Thanks everyone for the responses.

 

When you've got something like that, just having one or two pix may not be enough. Last pic shows more but glare makes it hard to tell what's inside the wood. Can u get pix of it in different positions-does the inside thing come out?

 

I'd say that's a place to hold extra blades....but it looks like there's a human face in the metal ?????

It fits into a shoe. Used last by Rosa Kleb when she tried to kick James Bond in the shins with it.
