The text is read from the top down, in colums, going left to right.

My Chinese is super-rusty, but this...

...refers to a period of time.

The last character is "Nian" - Year / Years.

The three above are numbers. Read from the top going down: "Er, Shi, San" - 2, 10, 3.

    2 10s are 20, + 3, so... "23 Years".

Thx. Building on another item I’ve had translated recently, it was marked with Daoguang 28,

    +

    or 1848.

so it’s looks like this one is 5 years younger, 1843. Probably.

A former co-worker’s relative is Chinese and gevevme this rough translation: -unknown symbol near muzzle -“30th. ??? ??? Place” -gun was “made for ???” -(two persons names). Chinese calendar words meaning 1843. -work supervisor name “Ma Hing” -how many guns were in the production lot -three names, people who made it, left one hidden in photo by hardware, one name is “So ???” -bottom section: Weight of gunpowder to use =1.7 old Chinese ounces, Weight of lead ball: 2.2 old Chinese ounces. The words meaning literally “Eat pure medicine” could refer to the type of gunpowder the gun wants to eat? Here’s the unknown, non-text symbology. I suspect it was carved by a later owner, the First owner assumed to be the Qing dynasty and its Army. Perhaps it was captured by the carver. Kindly decipher these marks and post results here.
