IMG_2656.jpg IMG_2662.jpg IMG_2663.jpg IMG_2665.jpg IMG_2669.jpg Hello All! I got this engraving at an estate sale in Galveston Texas. It's been through a hurricane or 2. It's probably not worth much due to the mold stain. Correct? It's signed by the engraver Stanley Pratt. Does this make it more valuable? Are engravings worth much or does it depend on the artist? Or the engraver? It is an engraving? Right? Thank you for your knowledge.

The title is "Thoroughbred." It would be "more valuable" than it is now if 1) the mold is successfully removed and did not leave any discoloration behind, 2) if Stanley Pratt were a famous artist or engraver (and I have no idea whether that is so.) But "more valuable" is a relative term and does not imply a large increase in absolute terms. I am not optimistic. You might want to ask around your area about restoration services. It could be a great deal more than the piece would be worth.

The original is by John Frederick Herring Snr (Senior).

I found canvas copies online (as "Mare and Foal"), but not the original.

Very meager information on Pratt (he died young):

I'm guessing this is an engraving, especially with that note: "with the engraver's best wishes". There is a plate mark (for what that's worth). A couple of really tight, sharp close-ups would confirm.

The mold in the corner probably overwhelms any value. Neither the engraver nor the artist is particularly well-known.

Thank you. I've tried to research these type of etchings or engravings before and the value is all over the place. $20 to $2000. I guess I'm trying to figure out what makes for the big difference in values. Most of them have quite a bit of info on them making research fairly easy. I'm talking in general as I know this one is damaged.

I have prints I've bought for $10 that I see online for $500. I don't get excited. It's what things sell for that counts, not what someone might imagine the value to be.
