Featured Please help to identify the age and the origin of this vase

It was found near Beirut, Lebanon(east Mediterranean coast), while digging, on the 2 meters depth. Hope, somebody might help with identifying it .

Welcome, Bookworm. Please always choose full size when posting pictures. When did the excavation occur? Did you see the ewer being taken out of the ground? Was there anything else with it?

 

It is ancient Daunian circa 500-350BC, I'm certain of it... Originally made in the Apulia region.

I agree with AUhills, the style is very much Daunian. To ascertain if it is of the period it is best to take it to a museum or an expert who can handle it and smell it, things that are important when determining the age.
As Bronwen said, no one can authenticate it from a photo.

Yea in person I could say 100% but even with this one picture as someone that deals in a lot of antiquities I would be comfortable authenticating it. Not that there aren't a lot of fakes out there but this isn't one of them, (I've seen enough examples of fakes and authentic pieces to be a pretty good judge of this when there is enough to go off of in the picture) Plus it's usually more valuable pieces that are faked, these aren't super rare and in this size, style, and broken & cracked condition it is worth around $600-750USD in a gallery here in the United States. So not a big money artifact but I still consider it to be a nice very cool piece.

 

That is more than enough for fakers. Small Harappa ceramic animals sell for less and are faked a lot, also with broken off horns etc. So are many other antiquities.

Bookworm, I still think it is best to take it to someone for a hands on indentification.

AJ was so quick, she saw my original post even though I edited it within minutes. We sometimes get similar requests, then find OP already has firm ideas on the subject, & a wrangle ensues if we disagree or question. Thought that was about to happen here until I realized it was not OP making the assertion.

I have a few things in my collection of engraved gems that were similarly authenticated on the grounds of not worth forging.

Bookworm, if you take that to someone to be looked at for verification be sure come back and let us know what they had to say. Anything else you can tell us about the origins of it or where it was excavated from?

 

It does not look at all like the Daunian/Apulian jugs/pitchers/ewers I'm finding, not in shape nor in decoration. Age may be in the same time frame, culture seems wrong, unless the problem is that search is showing me Sevres when this is every day use Anchor Hocking.

 

There are different style periods.

AJ is just greased lightning today. The 2 handled one could definitely be a contemporary of OP's. It looks like others I saw in casual search in that the main part of the body is fairly spherical & neck is narrowed considerably. Does say it's a rarer type & is selling right in AU's range.

Concerning it’s authenticity it was found by me, I didn’t buy it from anyone.
