I recently purchased this large lacquer bowl at a thrift store near Palm Springs, CA. It is 13" wide, 4" tall and weighs 8.8 oz. There is intentional wear along the sides and some additional wear on the rim, bottom and inside of the bowl. The interior also shows what may be marks from an electric sander.

Can anyone help me identify the origin of this bowl and when it was made? I can't find anything like it online. I am very curious about its origin, age and value.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It is a Burmese (Myanmar) lacquer offering bowl. These usually come in nesting sets or with a lid.
The wear looks natural to me, in which case it is probably 19th century. The inside of the bowl would have been protected by the bowls that sat inside it.
But you say the wear is intentional, which I have never seen on Burmese lacquer. If it is indeed intentional, I can't date it. What makes you think it is intentional?

Are you saying it was intentionally aged by long use or to give the impression (fake) of age ?

Thank you! I live in the US, in California near Palm Springs. I have only had it a few weeks. I purchased it in a thrift store. The surface of the bowl is lacquer. I thought the bowl was carved wood but it only weighs 8.8 ounces which is light for a solid wood bowl of this size.

I misspoke. I shouldn't say that the wear is intentional, only that it is very decorative and uniform. I think your explanation for the lack of wear on the interior is very reasonable -- thank you for your insight.

The inside is made of thin bamboo strips that are bent into shape, hence the weight (or lack thereof).

I did consider that it was similar to the Burmese monk bowls, but the form appears different. It doesn't have feet or sit on a foot. It may be an interior bowl though. Thank you for sharing your insight -- I'm very glad to know what it is!

I did think it might be intentional because the wear is uniform, decorative and unusually placed. However the wear is easily explained by the bowl being on the interior of a nesting bowl set which I had not considered before. Thank you for replying!
