Just finished restoring this rare little pin cushion, The original silk had perished but luckily I had a piece of victorian silk almost the same colour.
I had to take it apart in order to put the masts back in but I think it came out nice. IMG_0282.jpg

Very nice! I like the little boat. Is it missing a mast?

I'm not sure, I've never seen one so I can compare, Its so rare.
I wondered if there was a missing mast but I couldn't work out how it would fit.
There was no evidence of a third mast being there.

I don't think it is missing a mast because the original stuffing was in tact with little bits of the original silk still attached. IMG_0279.jpg

That's cute - what material is the boat and masts made from?

It's made from Ivory but it's pre 1947 of course.

I think this one is early victorian, A bit earlier than the more common Bellows and Wheel Barrows.

Adjusted the masts, According to hubby they should look more like this, He may be right as I did find the original thread wrapped around the shorter mast as I've done it now. IMG_0283.jpg

It wouldn't post a full image for some reason.

On second thoughts it looks like the masts are bone.

    Circa 1820.

I'm now of the opinion this is a one of a kind gift made by a sailor.

That's a really interesting thought, Wouldn't that be great! I really don't think there is another in existence, I have absolutely scoured the internet for another and there is nothing.

Yes it does doesn't it.....I have to defer to hubby on this one :)

The masts are more secure like that too.

Looking closely it is roughly cut suggesting he did not have many tools available and/or wasn't as experienced as he may have wished to do the fine finish work. :)

This is a Bellows pin cushion from the same era and made the same way, These are fairly common.

I like the way you changed it, although also like the way you first showed it. Very nice!
