Not translucent so I'm calling it soft paste porcelain, though maybe other type ceramic. Too small to hold soup - interior about 5" by 4" by 1-1/2" - so tableware or desktop? Does anyone know the crown mark - Derby without a D? Could that be an AT in the corner? Any ideas?

This is not soft paste but ironstone and very Masons- like.

For your other question - tableware, I think.

Pin box? I'd use it as a soap dish!! I must be obsessed with hand washing.

Could be a sugar box or condiment dish of some sort, but I don’t think trinket. I think SIS is likely correct with the ID.

Looks like a soap dish from a jug and basin set for washing.

Soap dish would have an insert or ridges though.

It might have had an insert now missing.

Bit shallow for that - it's only an inch and a half.

I am not trying to hijack Jeff's thread here, but I have a similarly sized and shaped dish in silver plate and I'm wondering if Jeff's and my items have the same original purpose. Not deep enough for soap, not big enough to hold much... Butter pats? Something else?
