The photo shows the “muzzle banner” of a Spanish cannon made in the the 1740’s. The muzzle banner on Spanish cannons always contains the given name of that particular cannon. Often it is an animal species name, but can be a family name or something like “Justiciero” reflecting a desirable quality of an entity. This is a small cannon model, barrel only 10” long, so if it got an animal name it might translate to “The Butterfly” or some small pretty insect or animal. Or it might be a personal name or noble House (titled dynasty) in Spain at that time. But anyway, here’s my slightly-embellished, cropped photo. I used to have programs to do better enhancement on my PC, but the iPad I use most of the time now Doesn’t have a good app for that yet.

Looks more like NACA... to me. There isn't a lot of detail there to enhance so going to be a difficult one.

Thanks, dunno. It seems to have lettering all the way across and the start does look a bit like what you propose. I have the provenance write up and will soon post some info on the family it is said to have come from, maybe someone can tie that dynasty to something in the faint text?

Butterfly is 'mariposa' in Spanish. I don't know if anyone recognizes that in the faint bumps? La mariposa.

Thanks, I’d still be interested if anyone could decode that blur with high confidence. The rest of the text on the piece is perfectly clear, and the barrel is on a perfect, correct carriage, but it looks like the barrel was cleaned and that lightly-engraved inscription was mostly lost in the process. I’d love to have the item if the name was legible but I’m going to pass due to that issue, more than I want to pay for something that’s maybe 75% of condition I’d need for the price.

Any chance you can upload the original - full size, here or elsewhere? I might have better luck sharpening/ bringing out the detail if you can...

All I can suggest at this point is that I am leaning more towards what Davey said - SEGGO and there may be an "F" or a "T" in front of the S in Seggo. Just not enough pixels to bring much else out.
