From its design, I would think it was a hospital. (The wings allow air and light to the maximum number of wards.)

Not much of an "entrance" - so I would think this might be a view of the back. But given the building's height and the uniformity of the windows - and the "power plant" off on the left side - I would guess hospital, first, or part of a university, second.

The 'power plant' may be a crematorium/incinerator, hospitals generate tons of medical watse and bits of bodies, apart from whole ones. Look at any hospital and you'll usually find a tall chimney somewhere lurking nearby.

I'll never pass a hospital again without looking for a smokestack now... :watching:

Old fashioned hospitals give me the willies. Well, okay maybe not old hospitals...but old sanitariums and old lunatic-asylums do...horrifying places. The names don't help much either.

I mean seriously. There is (or was) a mental asylum in England called Hellingly Hospital. I mean you can't get more twisted than that. And yes, it was a real psychiatric hospital.

And no, I'm not making that up. Here it is:

It closed in 1994. Most of it is demolished now, but apparently there are still some outbuildings that remain.

I once inspected the inside of the incinerator at a hospital when it was temporarily closed for maintenance. Those were the days!

We lived in San Francisco in the late 60's when George was in the Army. They didn't have a position for his MOS so he ended up as a clerk for the head of surgery at Letterman Hospital. One of his jobs was burning body parts.
