I believe this is a wall mount salt box. Many are French. There are repros out there. Not sure if mine is original or a repro? Can’t tell if the animal on left of touchmark is a greyhound or a deer or neither. The right side a lion maybe? Any help on the mark would be appreciated. 878855A7-FBB4-41B9-B3AA-D7578C4E94D2.jpeg 3B7871D3-4755-40CD-B782-11828C706378.jpeg

The link Roaring posted says it is for holy oil. How big is it?

Crismeras usually being a bit more decorative

    salt box for me too
maybe the height would help ? :)

if the "box" part is 10cms +- = probably matches

Thanks. Left at the very end of 2 or 3 day sale and acquired for a couple bucks. Even in those closing mins it was one of the cooler sales I’ve been to in a while. Deer lion sounds good.

Yeh I found things close called a few different things. Salt box for my style seemed to be a right after I averaged them all out. Watching the sunset on the porch. I’ll measure once it’s down. It’s relatively large.

Matches was my initial thought when I picked it up at the sale. At that point I didn’t know wall hanging salt boxes were a thing. Mine would be probably around double the size of most American cast iron wall mount match boxes I’ve see.

The size and shape are right for a salt box, although I don't like the salt and pewter combo. Maybe it held a glass liner? Dutch salt boxes are usually ceramic.
Much more important than measuring boxes.

Total dimensions 5”Lx4”Wx8”H. Could be matches it wouldn’t be shocking to me. I just saw more in this form and in pewter being called salt boxes.

    > Everything else

I just got a little sterling/glass swan from salt cellar yesterday. The lady kept salt in it with the spoon kept in the salt for however many years/decades it had been sitting in its hutch. The spoon was not a happy camper when I found it. I have never seen how pewter reacts to salt over a long time period but I guess it’s probably not good either.

Pewter is tough, it can look really old even if it's just a bit old.

Just wanted to mention that I looked through two of my pewter marks books without seeing it. They were Tardy's Poinçons d´étain and Stara's Pewter Marks of the World. Always possible to miss something but didn't find anything close when I checked.

I think you’re right, in some cases it can be tough. Typically it will reveal itself for what it is in one way or another but not always. I appreciate you looking! If the web, users here, and your world books are all unfamiliar with the mark it will probably remain a mystery.
