When I saw this in the thrift store, I claimed it fast, even though I had no idea what it was. I paid $8.00.

So after researching, I now know that it's "Head of Janus" pewter vase designed by Anna Petrus.
    Made by Svenskt Tenn, Stockholm.
The bottom mark dates it 1948.
4.25"(11 cm) high, and weighs a hefty 2.5 lbs.

My Janus has a small gash on his cheek and three small mysterious holes on the top rim, which would effect value, I'd assume.

I'm shocked at the online prices! So my question is, why would someone pay this much for this item???

There were many of them listed online, so they don't seem to be rare.

Given holes... Do you think it was meant to be hung?

I thought that too, but it's WAY too heavy to hang...you could kill someone if you threw it at them!
One of the holes doesn't go all the way through, either.

I read that it was designed in 1927, so Deco indeed!

Awesome ! I bet you could get that scratch buffed out and those holes filled in fairly easily. Or you could do what I would (being the cheapo I am) and just polish it up and stick a plant in it ! In a pot ,of course.

I fixed him up a little. I burnished the ding then tickled it a bit with steel wool.

I would've broken my arm yanking out the $8 ! Only one foolproof way to know what it's really worth-ya 'List It'.
PS-'1stDibs' was the imaginary place I used to go to when I had a bit too much Cognac & herb, all my stuff was priceless when I visited that particular Xanadu.
    PS-'Dibs' aside,it's worth lots more than 8 smackers,Congrats !
    PSS-Nice retouch.

Isn't it funny, all those lofty prices! Like who in their right mind ......
But I don't mind spending a few bucks in the Animal Humane thrift store. They always have nice things there, and hopefully it helps the critters
