I started going through some of my jewelry (inspired by you all) and came across Art Deco pieces that had patent #s on them (one says Patent Pending). I know, strange as it may seem, I had never known what this meant until today. ALL.jpg BACKS.jpg PEND.jpg WINGS.jpg DOUBLE.jpg GOLD.jpg

So, of course, I went about trying to match the patent #s to find the dates on my jewelry...but it didn't work.
Only one came back that was similar and the others came back as other things, like machinery, or whatever. Jewelrypatents.com did not really help me. Can any of you?

    Thank you
I did try the patent site but the instructions she gave did not match up with my patent #s. Either I cannot understand the language or I am missing something along the way.

Sometimes the patents are for the pin mechanisms, clasps etc. Can be used by any maker.

As INH said it’s often the mechanisms. Coro had their Duette clip and other manufacturers had their own versions of that.

I looked a number up the other day and was surprised to find it together with all the drawings. It was a dress clip from 1931. Some you can find, others have disappeared into the mists of time!.

So then, if the patent #s basically are for parts of the pieces, can you really date the pieces by that? Or is it just safe to say because of the time period the patents were used, it authenticates the age of the piece? If they are made from pot metal and cut glass...do they still have value because they are "patent jewelry"? I guess I am still curious.
Thank you for finding some of the "mechanisms", anyway.

Dating could only be assumed to be any time after the patent date of the mechanism. The mechanism can be used on a variety of value and quality jewelry.

A patent # only tells you when it was approved by the government. It does not tell you when the item was manufactured and used.I know of one company who has marked the same number on their products for the last 100+ years.
