I really can't tell if old or recent.
    What do you think?

I have not handled a lot of bisque porcelain. With the glazed one it is more easy to tell age. I googled some old examples of Parian ware and they look newish, just like this one.

I also vote old. I'd be real surprised to see that kind of crispness on a new piece. Very nice!

You are right, very crispy details.
By the way, was there something with the old molded pieces, like there should be no hole on the upper inside part of the handle? I think I read something like that before about the majolicas.

Your pitcher is shown on p. 46 of Bennington Pottery and Porcelain by Richard Carter Barrett (1958). He calls it "Daffodil Pattern" and dates it 1847-1858. He says it's an "extremely rare pattern". There were 2 sizes, 11" tall and 4 1/2" tall. He also says the 11" shown is the only known example. How tall is your pitcher?

Now, I understand that Barrett's book is controversial. I don't know a lot of details, but apparently the attribution of some items to Bennington has been questioned. Perhaps someone on this board can provide more information.

Regardless, I think you can safely assume your pitcher is antique and likely dates to the period Barrett states.

As a lover and collector of parian pitchers, all I can say is I love love love it!

    About 9 - 9 1/2". Thanks a lot for the info.
I've asked before but while on the subject, do you think this one is old?

I do think it's old. I'll do a little research tonight and see if I can find anything.

I haven't been able to pin down your piece. I assume it's a butter dish?

Bennington loved decorating with bunches of grapes, so I'm leaning in that direction although nothing is shown in Barrett's book. Dudson (England) did quite a bit of parian table wares, but many other British potteries did as well--Minton, Copeland, Chelsea, Brownfield, and many more. Butter dishes are uncommon, and yours is beautiful. I would date it mid 1800s.

Doesn't look like a butter dish. Looks like 3 pieces, lid, bowl and saucer. Sauce dish?

    Ascot -
Did any German company do Parian?

cluttered - the few parian butter dishes I could find all were 3 piece--lid, bowl, under plate. Sauce dish seems plausible too, though.

I really don't know if Germany did parian wares, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did. I started collecting parian pieces years ago because I liked them and no one else ever bid on them at auctions, so I got them for a song--or a line from a song :joyful:.
Years later, a friend gave me Barrett's book and I was able to ID many of them. I'm a sucker for jugs and lidded syrups.
