Transparent red, about 1 7/8" diameter, with a 7/8" center hole; they're each about 0.135" thick, an' as pic 3 shows, they're molded, so not Catalin/Bakelite.
Perhaps the hardware is an indicator of where/when made...I can only hope. They were in a free tub at a church rummage sale some years ago. Something about them said European...but I cannot now say what, exactly; probably wishful thinking. Thanks for lookin'!

Those wire latches are common, I'm wearing a pair of gold hoops right now that work the same way :)

Can you say when, roughly, they were first used?

I tried to pin down a date when the latch backs were first used but didn't have any luck. I know they were popular when I was teen in the '60's if that helps.

Those wires were already seen in Antiquity, and are still used today.

Who knew? I don't wear the durn things...an' am usually unobservant of adornment detail while gazing fondly into my ladies' ears. I won't nibble on an earlobe burdened with such glitter, which they all know, an' most are accommodating of my peculiarities.
