Featured Paintings on camel bone. Iran

Posting this here for a friend on the Coin Talk site. Any insights?



All through the 60’s-80’s my grandad was a wildcat oil man mostly in Iran. Grandma followed him around the world and brought home trinkets from all over.... Two years ago grandma passed and my mother insisted that I bring these home with me. And now curiously has the better of me.

They are beautifully ornate tiny paintings. On the back grandma wrote “May 1976, Shiraz Iran, Camel Bone, 3800 Rials.

I am not an art person but the tiny paintings are just beautifully ornate.... Is this just street market art designed to separate foreigners from their cash or some sort of genuine artwork? Anyone ever seen anything like these?

 

I can't tell you much about them but I have one also. I've never checked to see what it's painted on so don't know if it's bone. The frame is beautiful!

Mine was a gift to my husband given by a co-worker when he returned from visiting family in Iran. I imagine it was in the 80s.

LOL maybe we do! I'm guessing probably gift items rather than fancy art.

Yes, they are painted on camel bone, and as inh said, the inlay on the frames is called khatam. They are always very pretty.

Yes we do, several, and boxes. I sold a box with the Kaaba on it for very nice money years ago.

 

Just for fun I thought I would look that up. 3800 Rials is just £0.062 at todays exchange rate, and adjusted for inflation from 1976 is just £0.52. I think that shows inflation calculators may not be accurate across all currencies and that recent times hasn't been kind to the Iranian economy.
