Looks like Kunta Kinte ... or rather, the actor who played him in the original "Roots" series.

 

LaVar Burton was the original Kunta Kinte the week of January 23, 1977. How do I know? I was in the hospital having my youngest son and the woman in the bed next to me insisted on watching it even though I just wanted to sleep. You are correct. It was done from the advertisement.

Oh, god, a painting on velvet. I'll bet those are going to be highly collectible some day!! Should've kept my Dad's Elvis one.

Now I wonder what exactly is the cover, photo collage? The credit is of Jim Brit who is a photographer. I guess he took the photo of Alex Haley but how about the LeVar Burton images?

Ok, forget about it. Just read it. He worked for ABC studios. According to him, the photo of Lavar was a double exposure, done in the camera by rewinding and re-exposing the film. Whatever that means.
