Painting from Beirut?

Hi all,

Picked this up yesterday. Not sure what it is but the only clue is the sticker on the back. Anyone recognise it or know what it may be?

I opened it up and there was nothing on the back.

a tribal elder...........with no sense of humor !

 

Tribal? In Lebanon? But I agree, he doesn't look happy. Just saw his hometown being blown to pieces maybe?

I can't find the gallery, if someone else can, maybe they could help. Or just phone them, the number is on the label. Commodore street is in the centre of Beirut, there are a lot of galleries, restaurants.

Hi Samuel,
The headscarf he is wearing does not appear to be the traditional style of Lebannon or the middle east. See photos 1&2.
It does have some similarities to Indian headscarves, but again not an exact match. See photos 3,4,5.
His beard looks both middle eastern style and Indian.
Sorry, I'm not being much help.

 

It depends on which Lebanese ethnic or religious group.
Yasser Arafat (Palestinian, definitely not Lebanese) and the gentleman next to him look like Sunni. The man on the painting could be Shia, or even a Kurdish refugee. Beards like that are seen in the entire eastern Mediterranean, even in Greece.

 

I'd have guessed India without the sticker.

 

Facial features look Afghan/Pashtun or maybe Kurdish.
