Hi all,what do you all think of this painting? Little dark. Debora kindly translated the Russian on the back of the canvas (a while ago)

I looked at church/temple ruins in Smolensk. Didn’t find any other paintings by VV Krivchenkov. So amateur artist? Or maybe a copy of a another painting?

Looks amateur or student work to me.. Canvas size is 60x80cm. So painted in 1960? What is the 199/ for?

It says 1991, the date of the painting. Krivchenkov was born in 1960.

 

It may be meant to represent the aftermath of a battle (e.g. broken tree limbs.) Yeah... Here's something similar of Smolensk.

Nice piece,I wouldn't call it amateur-expressionistic,emotional,but not clumsy,clunky or amateurish.
It's sombre,but a good piece.

 

My guess would be the artist was painting something he was told about, from WWII. Parts of western Russia took a LOT of damage. Smolensk got hammered.

 

I think it was more likely inspired by a period photograph. Assumption Cathedral. 1941.
