This was at a thrift this week.

Found a lot on "P. Hoppe" online connected w/Delft blue. Seems like this stoneware one might be an old gin bottle.

The handle is crudely applied and the stamped name is a bit primitive looking. Other P. Hoppe bottles had a lot more info stamped on the front.

I found a similar one to mine on WorthPoint:

No idea if the seller's description was accurate, but this WP one is the closest I've found. Do you think mine could be that old?

I hope someone with more knowledge than me chimes in on this today. I found a few of these online. Here's one on eBay. An earlier attempt to sell may be the same as the one on WP:

This page has 4 Dutch glass gin bottles with 2 of them have P. Hoppe seals. They are dated 19th century.

    "a medium-green bottle with "P.HOPPE / SCHIEDAM" seal; and a light-green bottle with "P. HOPPE / SCHIEDAM"

and then there's this glass bottle dating to 1880. Now are their stoneware bottles older than their glass?????

Note the pic at the top of the following article on "Gin: The Complete History." They are all pottery with the info:
"Old pottery bottles of Dutch Genever"
    http://www.drinkingcup.net/gin-the-complete-history-part-1/

I suspect your P. Hoppe bottle is older than their glass ones.

BTW, it is a 3 part history of gin of everything you ever want to know and the reverse of everything you don't care to know about gin. LOL There is no mention of P. Hoppe in the article.

Susan, thank you so much for all of those info and links!

You had some of the same questions I did on this piece. Would this on be the same age as the glass ones?

I had seen a few of the ones you posted, and observed that each is a bit different. The Ebay one is stamped with "P. Hoppe, Schiedam Holland". The WP one is stamped only with "P. Hoppe Schiedam" and mine is just "P. Hoppe"

No idea if that is any clue to age. Also on mine it almost looks like the name might have been etched into the wet clay by hand as the letters are a bit uneven, but could be a stamp.

    Thanks!

say_it_slowly The worst prison is a closed heart

I have some similar bottles that were actually made for bottled water so I think they were just used for various liquids but none the less what I've found when researching is that these seem to be from the late 19th C to the early 20th C. The swirl marks on the bottom of your show yours was from a wheel. Here is a little info from Digger O'dell's site about similar bottles from a different maker. I'm adding my bottles that still have corks and one still has it's foil/lead? cover.
