It definitely pays to keep looking for for what your're in search of - for many years (like 20) I've been looking for a painting of the schooner 'Gertrude L. Thebaud' by artist Larry O'toole who was a well known artist in the Boston/Cape Ann art & sailing community in the 1930's & 40's. My desire was driven by the fact that Larry was close friends with my father, who was crew aboard the 'Thebaud' during the Fisherman's Cup races of 1938. Larry was the official artist for the U.S. Coast Guard for a time, and did murals at Navel officers clubs. He died young in 1951 at 42. I will find a more appropriate frame - this ones not original and is just too much frame for this painting... oil on canvas measuring 20 x 24 inches. s-l1600.jpg

Congratulations in your find, Drew! And you're right; the frame isn't enhancing the painting at all.

Well......ummmmm....it is a nice frame....& the goldish tones ...I find...do indeed set off the stone cold blue of the painting....giving it a certain depth.....like looking out a window !
I'd keep it like that ....for a time at least...& see if'n it don't grow ya !!!
    :):):);)

NICE painting! You're right however in that the frame needs to go; I'd go to a gilded one without all the florals and furbelows.

I do see both opinions on the frame.... the gold does set off the paintings blue in a striking way, but it's just overpowering at close to 6 inches wide on each edge. The painting is of dory fishing on a calm moonlight night... I'll take it slow on finding what I feel better suits it. Thanks to all...

I've seen some pre-WWI photographs printed in the same shades of blue. The artist may have too.

As it is, the mast is almost chopped off. It needs a simple frame - a thin gilt line against a very wide pale border, looking like a matte, if that makes sense.

    Hi Drew,
I have these 5 paintings from Larry O’toole. Can not tell if they are original watercolors or prints of oil. Please let me know if these would be something that you would be interested in acquiring. Thanks.
