Origin of monkey/human wooden fertility carving?

I picked this up at a really cool “upscale” thrift store a month or two ago. I’ve been trying to find one like it ever since without any luck. It stood out as being different and seemingly older than most of the wooden carvings (mainly from Africa) that I see that seem to be made for tourist trade. Not saying this one isn’t made for that purpose as I have no idea but it was different enough that I had to grab it. The origin is driving me nuts. I’m thinking pacific islands. Polynesia or PNG. Maybe Siam or Thailand? I really haven’t found anything even resembling it. I wanted to figure it out on my own but alas I need help. I won’t be surprised if one of y’all find it within minutes! It’s not signed or marked anywhere that I can tell. Unfortunately the ass crack is a real crack in the ass. Gotta be close to a foot tall.

That could certainly be it. Hanuman type figure. Still can’t find one close to it searching a bunch of different ways using Bali in the search though. I would think I could find something that looked like it. Unless it’s just a totally one of a kind artist creation.

If anyone can help date it that would be cool too.

 

Are we sure it is a monkey? Perhaps a hyena? It might be depicting a female, which Hanuman was not. Perhaps giving birth to...something. That is an odd head-dress also, somewhat Egyptian-looking, possibly. Just some thoughts.

 

I’m not sure of anything! Both in general and in relation to this carving lol. I think it most likely is a female (pregnant I would hope or just very unflattering). I never considered a hyena but could be. The hat I think is the key to the question of where it comes from. Match the hat and you can trace it to a culture or maybe a colonizer at the very least.

Other than that it looks like a pregnant woman with a monkey or dog-like face.
It is not like any traditional carving I know. Certainly not Pacific, PNG, or Thailand (old name Siam).
I wouldn't rule out certain parts of Indonesia, specifically made for the tourist trade. Or as a commissioned piece for a specific decorator.

 

I think it's an artist's carving from Bali, not meant to represent any particular diety, perhaps a little souvenir.

Hi, sorry I never saw this. For some reason I only get alerts for some of the replies to my threads. The piece is almost exactly 1ft tall. Relatively big IMO. What points to Bali in your opinion? Or is it hard to point to an exact feature and just based on years of experience?

 

The more I looked at hyena art from Africa the more I think you’re spot on here. I thought I replied to this post more but maybe it didn’t load. I found some masks that were quite similar looking to this face. I forget the tribes and locations but I’ll look back and update at some point.
