Looks like you picture of the marks (the first one) is upside-down, Marty.

    Nice looking pot.

    Spurious Ming Xuande mark.

Why spurious? And which mark are you referring to?

Why spurious? Do you seriously think that's 600-year-old decoration fit for an Chinese emperor on a 600-year-old pot?

If you've nonetheless got doubts of the wishful-thinking sort, then look at some real Xuande bronzes.

And the "Xuande" mark is the square mark.

Please excuse my ignorance I had little to no idea of the implications of a Xuande marking.

I think many times people new to antiques and particularly Asian items, are not aware of how much was copied or made to look like old items.

I don't believe Marty was thinking this was a 600 year old pot, I think he/she was simply trying to understand why you thought it was a fake.

Also, I want to thank you for all the help you give to those of us who are trying to id various Asian pieces. You are a valued member here, please don't forget that.

So would it be fair to say this is just imitation junk?

Not necessarily. I don't know oriental items beyond what I've seen on Antiques Roadshow, but it is apparently quite common for items to have symbols from earlier times; a 200-year old pot may have a mark indicating it is 400 years old...doesn't mean it is junk, just that it is not as old as the mark indicates.
This may have some value, even if made for the tourist market.
    How big is it?

    Hi,
I think someone in the past tried to polish the bowl with brass polish. I would give it a good cleaning with a soft brush to get rid of the polish deposits before they eat into the brass. I do not recommend polishing the bowl but I would remove all of the left over polish in the bowl.
