What is your opinion on this Lalique wheel-cut signature? It's on a correct period piece, an Ondines plate. I wonder if its too messy? I have seen some variation among wheel cut signatures, just not sure on this one. laliquesignature.jpeg

Welcome, Riddles. Can you reduce the number of riddles concerning this piece so we can see the rest of it? We do better with as much info as we can get up front.

Sorry. :) I am an amateur collector of antiques that I find interesting, and this Lalique piece is up for auction. It's an Ondines No. 3003 plate circa 1921. laliqueplate.jpeg

I'd get very suspicious, very quickly.

Somewhat. Its definitely a wheel-cut signature. But it seems not quite as clean? I've been looking at several different wheel-cut signatures, and there is variation, just not sure how much is considered authentic.

I would expect quite a bit of variation on the fine points, just by the nature of the process, but can't claim any expertise in the matter. When handwriting experts evaluate a signature for authenticity, it makes them highly suspicious if the second signature is a perfect match for one that has been published somewhere.

Are the female figures the same as in the example Bronwen posted? Are they as detailed, are the forms the same?

The bowl is much more translucent, but the item up for auction is the same as numerous other Ondines plates I've examined online.

Think the specimen we're considering is the one shown & described as #13 in kraftblue's great reference book. Sounds like it had to be applied essentially freehand, so a lot of variation is to be expected.
