    Hi Charlie,
This is very interesting. Not finding anything similar either. The only question I can maybe help a little, slide a mirror under damaged area. Look online at examples of pigskin. The “suade side” has large pore holes you might be able to distinguish.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

So, am I correct that the black area is where the skin or leather is missing??? Sure looks like it has some age to it!! Nice conversation piece at the very least!!! And I think if it were USED as a foot stool, there would be a LOT more wear or damage to the pigskin......I wouldn't think the 'image' would seem so much intact....excepting of course for the black area.....

i had alook under inh, but the suede side isnt like the pics of pigskin with the marks, just normal suede, so probably isnt pigskin

Jivvy the research is my favorite

My family would have called this a "milking stool," but we don't know diddly about furniture, so take that for what it's worth.

i think you might be right actually, from looking at other stools online.

would be about the right height

For others like me who haven't had their Sunday morning coffee yet and missed the title, Mr "Bumble the Beadle" is one of the characters in Dickens Oliver Twist (or The Parish Boy's Progress) published in 1837-1839. He was responsible for running all the charity houses and orphanages in the parish where Oliver lived. It is mostly set in London and Bumble was played so brilliantly by Harry Secombe in the 1968 musical. That's him stepping out on the seat of the stool.
Sorry I missed that heading Charlie, but could this image and association help with identifying the stool? One company has a modern Bumble Stool in their furniture catalogue, so I wonder if there is an association, a play on words or a pun intended for your stool? I couldn't find any other cross-references, but I am thinking milk stool, kitchen stool or work stool of some sort.
But perhaps I'm just being too literal! Now where is that coffee??;)

    Hi,
I would just slide a piece of leather or even polyester leather under the hole. You could darken it with shoe polish.
