I went to York yesterday selling, I had a very good profitable day but only sold one item of silver a 1912 Vesta case for just above melt value.
I had many items of silver for sale dating from the 18th century and not a whisper for anything.

I took quite a large amount of scrap gold to an onsite precious metal dealer and he showed me a sack full of perfectly good silver going to melt.

Gravy boats, flatware, serviette/napkin rings, jewellry etc.

He stated no one buys it, he pays just below melt value for it then he leaves it out until the end of the day to see if someone wants to rescue it but it all goes back into the sack.

Plastic jewellery from the 40s is hot. When someone consults me about the value of a cameo that is set in silver, have to tell them their 'genuine sterling silver' adds nothing; you can barely give it away.

That's so sad. I imagine at some point the value will increase, but then all those wonderful pieces will have been destroyed. :(

I was an the monthly Antique Fair today, and I was a lot of silver sitting out. I don't know how it sold.

Last year i was selling a sterling silver necklace and ring that was little over a ounce, and two people offered me $10-$15 for them.Same with a vintage Gorham spoon $5 is all they wanted to pay.

Any silver I am offered I will buy, but only at metal value. However, it goes into my hoard or if possible gets used around the house, not melted.

I don't even pay more for Tiffany. It's too hard to sell, and I've even had real pieces returned because the person thought it could be fake. Now, it's straight to melt. Gorham is safer.

I've never paid anywhere close to melt for the silver I find, I consider storage fees, polishing fees, hoarding fees (have pounds and pounds of the stuff), wife complaining fees etc so have to buy at penny's on the dollar :cigar::cigar::cigar:

Yep. Absolutely true. For some reason people are happy to pay top dollar for 9ct gold items even though they are more likely to be fake than they are for solid old hallmarked silver stuff. :sorry::sorry:

There was one vendor today, who had a raft of silverware, both plate and sterling. He had a sign saying "All hand polished." I wanted some spoons for my spooner, but didn't want to break up his sets. After reading Davy's post, maybe I just should have bought it. Next time.

I think people have thr wrong idea abut silver tarnishing and needing to be polished all the time. Silver does not tarnish just for the hell of it, it needs sulphur in the air to blacken, and in the days of coal fires and industrial pollution unchecked, the air was indeed pretty corrosive in towns and cities.
These days are gone with the open fires and the steam engines burning high sulphur coal. I have lots of pieces out and in use as fruit bowls, vases, trays, utensils, and just decoration, and a light rub every six months is not an onerous task.
The excuse of not wanting to polish the things is probably just saying 'It looks old fashioned' and to be fair, most of it does. I cannot remember when I last saw a silver teaset used for tea making.
Forks and spoons still work, though, but it can be hard to find surviving knives.

24K will not tarnish, but the other Karat types alloyed with copper will tarnish.
