    Hello,
New here. I have a barn find.......an old sharpening wheel. I am wanting to know if these are collectable. Here is a photo of what I found roughly.....this is an image from Google.....the one I have has a different seat I believe

    Hello and welcome.

Can you take a picture of yours please. Also a picture of any manufacturer stamps or marks.

We need to see yours, there may be things about it that make it better or worse than the picture from google.

Using your phone, email the pictures to yourself as medium. Save them then post from there.

This is not anything I know about.
Maybe @springfld.arsenal might be able to comment.

People come and go at all hours so check back.
Not sure how often Spring checks in.

The first lines of Robert Frost's poem "The Grindstone" read:
"Having a wheel and four legs of its own
Has never availed the cumbersome grindstone
To get it anywhere that I can see."

Those lines are probably still true today in regard to the grindstone finding a pricey collectible status. There are examples with certain names or design features that command a premium, but most have remained static in value. With that said, yours is a very nice piece. I'm guessing it's from the 1930's-40's.

Yep, someone would love to have this and pay a bit for it. Not so much collectible as desirable (People probably don't usually collect multiples of these but would want to have one.). Could see this put right to work.

As an aside, an old neighbor we had when I was a kid had a similar one in his garage. He sharpened all the knives and tools for everyone in the neighborhood. He was a retired jeweler but was a Jack of all trades.

Don't you miss that generation. So self reliant, could fix anything.

We had one of these in the workshop on the farm that was used to sharpen everything from blades used on the tractors to house knives. Aside from the peddles, I believe Granddad had set ours up with a pulley system so it could be run off an electric motor. It could still be there!

Thank you for all of the input. I am leaning towards restoration and keeping it in the family. Where would I go to find out what it originally looked like....paint and if i was missing any components. I have seen some of these with a wooden box under the wheel .....i would assume to wash the stone as you worked..?
