We just pulled old desks from the attic of a country school house. Our Grandfather went to school there and never saw these desks. According to what students carved, they are from before WWII. We have 18. The frame is made of cast iron and has the company name in it. The top is wood and has a small half shelf underneath. The chair is attached to the front of the desk, making it so that the chair is for the desk ahead of it. The seat on the chair does fold up and down. Some of them are rough since children still carved in the wood but can be replaced. The cast iron frames are in wonderful shape, and the chair sections are great for their age. rsz_image1.jpg folded.JPG rsz_image4.jpg rsz_image3.jpg image2.JPG

    Hi,
They are wonderful but around here refinshed they only bring 50 or less. The ones that bring money are the "newer" ones with the seat attached to the front of the desk. So the little ones can use them. I much rather have ones like yours.
I do not know it they sell better in other parts of the country than here in The Jersey Shore.

Around here (Central MA) they will fetch between $100 and $200 each if you DON'T refinish them. Just clean them up and put some Olde English scratch cover on the wood. The carving adds authenticity and charm.

First & second grade, I went to a little two room school (Frostville) - these are the type of desks we had.
I was one of those kids that liked to wander around, so my teacher (Mrs Zilkie (sp?) ) would use my dress ties (remember those from the 1950s?) to tie me to the metal part of the desk behind me.

Messi! Yes! I remember that! My mother wondered why she was forever reattaching my sashes.

A propos of this topic, I remembered how enchanted I was when my sixth grade teacher told us that the original use for the groove at the top of the desk was to pour in molten lead to make pencils! And then, later in the year, I read "Understood Betsy," in which Dorothy Canfield Fisher tells the same story.

You may, however misguidedly, question Dorothy Canfield Fisher, but Miss Grimm? Never! Not in a million!!!

You do know that pencil lead was never really "lead"?
And that the groove, if used for that, would be charred?

    Hi,
On the newer desks they removed the inkwell hole. We were told it was removed since so many bad boys dipped girls pigtails into the ink. Balderdash.
