chair 1.jpg chair 2.jpg Cushion Tag.jpg Cushion 1.jpg I would like some help with identifying the age of an old rocking chair I acquired. The finish has turned dark, but it is constructed of quarter sawn oak and is well made. There are no identifying labels or writing on the frame, but there was a faint tag under the cushion that is hard to read. We cleaned it up and will put it back in use.

Hi Skywalker! Could you go back and edit your post to change the pictures from thumbnail to full image, please?

Style is Mission, circa 1910. Looks to be from a quality maker. I would scour this for marks. Tag has nothing to do with maker.

Do not refinish this. Looks to be good original finish. I would just clean it and apply a coat of paste wax.

Sorry for my ignorance, I don't know how to do this.

I will inspect in detail. I don't want to waste your time, but can you point me to a reference to furniture styles? I do know quality furniture, but am trying to educate myself as to styles & eras. Is there a difference from Arts and Crafts, Craftsman, and Mission styles? Thanks!

This one is very close, only slight differences. My guess is mine is a copy of a Gustav Stickley slatted rocker. It's a keeper for sure!

It looks a lot like the one in my living room.(LOL) Yours is probably missing the original seat; they were generally leather and springs. It probably fell apart about the time the cushion was made. I'd give yours a good polish as suggested and leave the wood be. The leather and springs in your seat are the original from what i can see. That back cushion thing was an add-on.

It is close to a G. Stickly #323 slatted rocker but not exact. The one in the link above is a modern reproduction so also not exact. Yours seems to be a similar period chair made by someone else. I could not find an exact match to your chair.

Yes and no. All three terms refer to a style of furniture produced in the late 19th to early centuries and can be used somewhat interchangeably. The arts and crafts movement is an umbrella term for this style that encompasses more than furniture. Craftsman was a trade name of Gustav Stickley's. Mission is a typically American term for this furniture.
