The only other cup I can find like this is the same cup with an extra Carter mark on the bottom. My question is why do three of the four cups I have have three additional hallmarks on the outside of the cup? And what do they mean?

Horrible pictures. The castle is the logo of the US Army Corp of Engineers.

From what little I can see in these unfocused pictures - at least 2 of these "extra marks" are Personal Signature marks of ONC employees who would have worked in this cup. The first (looks like a building with 2 towers) is for Robert Bean. The pine tree is Fletcher Carter.

We really need better pictures of the marks.

Perhaps in another context, Terry, but not in this case.

Sorry they are tiny. Is there a list of maker marks for Old Newbury Crafters? Off to look. Why would one cup not have marks?

Quote from Rainwater regarding the personal marks

"In 1965 the company started a practice, then unique in the American silver industry. Since that time, every handwrought piece has been marked personally by the craftsman who made it."

I don't know. Could have been an oversight? They certainly are tiny.

EDIT - A thought. This practice started in '65. Maybe the cup was made before that?

Better picture you were right on the first two but third one is not on list

Interesting. That third mark appears (I could be wrong!) to be the logo of the company. My notes say it was not used on wares. @DragonflyWink - thoughts?

WTH? - Have never, ever seen that before...

See ONC's 2005 response to a query (3rd from the bottom):

Talk about weird! And according to Bry, 3 of his cups have this extra mark. (@Brywil1970 Did I understand the numbers correctly?)

If you can get a decent pic of the bottom of a cup with all the marks shown, I can post it on that forum, but truthfully, it would be mostly to satisfy my silver-junkie curiosity - ONC smith Geoffrey Blake is a member there, though he might not have any further information. Regardless, your cups would date between '67, when Bean started, and '73, when Carter left...

Ok all four cups are marked on the bottom

    ONC
    STERLING
    902

All other marks are on the outside top of cup

1 is marked as pictured with Robert Bean, Fletcher Carter, and Griphon Mark

2 are marked with Fletcher Carter, Gayden Marshall, and Griphon Mark

the last one has no marks on outside

Hunhhh, that's very odd, and narrows your window on the two to 1965-68, since Marshall left in '68, and the unmarked one should date prior to the craftsmen's marks being instituted. No reason to have the marks on the outside, no reason that more than one smith would raise a cup - kinda makes me think those with the extra marks were perhaps not intended for sale. Sure that you intend to sell these, so I actually can't ask about them on SMP forum, it's against their guidelines - why don't you email ONC and ask, it's an extremely small staff, but they might able to give some insight. Would suggest better pics than these, along with all pertinent information - and please let us know if they respond...
