Featured Old metalic belt

  1. I don't know what metal this belt is, seems old, Caucasian (Russia, Armenian, Ottoman etc.) design is all I could gather. Had a look all over, no hallmarks, just the initials B U.

    Gorgeous!
It is a woman's belt from Dagestan (Daghestan) in the Caucasus. Here is a silver one:

The initials B and U should be read as Cyrillic, maybe the owner's initials. Caucasian silver is usually marked (Tbilisi assay mark), but not always, as you can see in my thread on Dagestan rings:

Do you have a silver testing kit? Here is a thread with info on testing:

A great jewellery making centre in Dagestan is Kubachi, your belt may have been made there.

  3. Wow, thanks for the info, I do have silver testing acid and scratch plate but not sure if I'll damage the value if it has antique value.

In the testing kit thread you can find advice on how to test safely, without damaging the metal. Most important is not to put the testing acid on the metal itself, and not to damage it in any other way.

  5. I will play it safe and get it tested a safer way just to be sure. The scratch plate does take the patina off and have not found it to be too reliable anyway.

I just hope it's not an imitation, if it's old and genuine but not silver it should still be worth something.

There is a lot of fake antique Russian silver around, but that is always hallmarked, to be 'absolutely convincing'. And I think most fake antique Russian silver is in the styles of Russia proper, Fabergé etc, not the Caucasian styles.
And yes, even if it is not silver it is worth something.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The bottom letter (that looks like a U with serifs at the top) does not look like a Cyrillic letter to me.

  9. No, it's not magnetic. Does look a bit too medium gray though.
