    Hey folks, happy Sunday! :)

Found this lovely cutlery set from a thrift store for only 20$. Looks as everything is in place, all of them stamped with the same number 800. In great condition too. Box looks old, but not sure how old this set a actually is.
I am more expert in porcelain and glass so metals is not my strong suit, but is it really silver? The price they set throws me off… they do have experts working there.
Any information on this set would be highly appreciated. I would love to know the maker/origin, age etc :)

    Set is very heavy.

    Thank you in advance!
    Erik

800 stands for .800 fineness, 800/1000 silver content. It is used in several countries.
I think in this case it is German, but let's wait for the others.

Thanks. Google suggest Italian, but most of them are silver plated. This one should be actually silver, right? Am I completely off if I think it is real silver and early 1900s?

Yes, actual silver and not plated. Early 1900s is a possibility.

I think I saw 900 one one knife. That's another silver mark. If it said 90 I'd be worried about plate, but I think you scored.

90 will mean plated, 900 is solid. Nice find.

Where I live, it would depend on the weight only. The knives are more difficult (stainless steel blades), but silver is silver all over the world. Some patterns are worth more, and who wants what depends on where you live, but all solid silver sets are worth at least silver price. Get a weight in grams and you're good to go.

    Message from Cheryl:

It is a fairly common mid 20th century or later Italian silver-plate, deceptively marked.

She linked to a thread, I am not able to access right now.

and the base metal is primarily zinc so they corrode badly anywhere there is plate loss

Agreed. I've had this same set about 15 years ago. It's plated.
