Can anyone please help age the pot or any other interesting information on the item. Also, how much could it be worth? Thanks in advance.

Also, can you take a picture of the pot showing the entire base from inside and outside. And shrink the photos little, by choosing medium or large size, most of these get blurry when expanded. I can’t tell if the patch or decor is in center of the base and if it’s showing inside.

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me. The diameter is 33 cms, 15cm tall. The patch is in the centre of the base and shows inside and outside. The base is convex like a ball. 20210513_172638_optimized.jpg 20210513_172627_optimized.jpg 20210513_172627_optimized.jpg

I could be wrong, but it looks like it could be from anywhere between Turkey and India.

Someone did good job patching that pot. Well done. I think India. Karen, Can I trouble you for one more photo of the handle from outside where it’s attached to the pot?

Based on its size I would say this is braising pot, kettle. It was used and cherished to the point that it was patched when burn hole showed up. There is very simple decor on the handle. This was meant for use in kitchen not decor. In my opinion it’s older pot. Collector of old copper dishes may like it as these patches are not common, at least I only saw a few. It takes serious skill to do this. Back in my CoO we would patch big copper distillers used for alcohol making, usually very expansive PCs. Also, size of your kettle and the handle is not very common, so you may have some points there as well. I can’t tell you the value. My copper is not selling as it use to. Depending on your investment money spent, and how patient you are, I’m sure right person will want it.

So interesting. So it's from India. I bought the pot to hold a plant pot but realised after cleaning that it may be quite old and valuable. I will probably keep it as I like it but I need to make my kids realise that it's not for the skip when I go. Is it value in the 100's? My friend who was with me when I bought it thought £20 spent on it was too £20 too much. Be nice to tell her I made a good purchase. :) 20210514_082201_optimized.jpg 20210514_082212_optimized.jpg 20210514_082220_optimized.jpg 20210514_082212_optimized.jpg 20210514_082220_optimized.jpg 20210514_082201_optimized.jpg 20210514_082212_optimized.jpg 20210514_082220_optimized.jpg

Also, but what century do you think the pot is from? Before 1800?

from the form of the patches and dovetails, the form of handle and the combination of brass connectors it could be continental. it could be as late as WW2 because metal was limited and in some countries it was required - on request of the military - that mechanics and certain other professions had to do a watertight test piece at the end of their apprenticeship.

kG, you say "the base is convex like a ball"... so it doesn't/won't sit flat on a stovetop?
Does that mean this piece is meant for use over a fire?

Some countries use a stone / mortar ring with an opening on one side for cooking. The base of the pot sits in the lip of the ring... and the open side of the ring provides an area for the fire to get oxygen and for the cook to regulate the heat... I've seen videos; but I can't remember what country. That could account for the rounded base.

Yes, it won't sit flat so could of be used on a fire.
