    Hi all,

Someone is asking $400 for this. Does anyone recognize the style/make? Thx!

Style is Chippendale. Quality looks pretty good. Pics not sufficient to determine age. $400 is a lot on the secondary market unless legitimately old. That said, a new one will set you back for more.

Get dimensions too. The originals are much bigger than the repros.

He sent me a few more pics but said he'll be away for a week. So I'll inquire then about dimensions.

Based only on the style of the ball and claw, I would guess it's a 19th century rendition. The 18th century ones, regardless of region, were much more delicate and refined. The first image below is a Newport 1700s example, on the right a known c. 1900 piece. The smack-me-upside-the head best way to see the differences is to go look at the actual 18th century pieces in museums. It's really obvious in person. https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/chip/hd_chip.htm. BUT, although a student of, I am not a connoisseur of 18th century American furniture. Where is @James Conrad? Either way, it's quite a nice chair. The needlework on the seat alone is valuable. $400 seems reasonable to me. newport.jpg s-l1600 (1).jpg

It's a reproduction Chippendale armchair as others have noted.
Single chairs are a tough sell usually & $400. USD is a rather insane number for a repro in my view.
Still, if for personal use it almost does not matter, if buying for resale count on holding onto it for a very long time.
