Stunning! And yes, it is a 'pillar rest'.
I think it is either Indian or Indonesian (Java-Madura). Could you post a photo of the man's headdress, including the back of his head?

I would vote for an Indonesian origin. The Indians have a better idea of what elephants actually look like. :)

Do you mean the people of the "Sumatra Elephant Conservation Response Units" look after their elephants with their eyes closed?:playful:

My Madurese ancestors had a herd of 'war elephants', which were taken by the Dutch. I am still considering to try and get 'our' elephants back, although I wouldn't know where to keep them. I only have a small garden.:joyful:

I just thought of my Ganesha-Putrasatu keris hilt. It is either from North Java or from Madura.
Ganesha has the same slanted eyes as the elephant above:

His ears have a Wayang style decoration.
Barely visible here is Ganesha's older brother Kartikeya, the two are actually back to back. In Indonesia Kartikeya is sometimes called Putrasatu, first son (of Shiva).

It is a highly decorated pillar base, which is a separate sculpture. The pillar 'rests' on the carving.

It does look like the tusks are placed in the lower jaw, in both @Scott Eidam's carving and AJ's keris hilt

    I guess so.
Or it could be a representation of a rare Javanese boar-elephant.:wacky:
