Old Ashtray? or Tea warmer?

This thing has clearly seen better days as it was crushed in the attic. Its been up there for at least 40 years or longer. This is the only piece. It looks like an ashtray to me, but its probably something else. On both sides there are tow depressions that look like something, maybe handles broke off. Regardless, anyone have any thoughts?

 

I can't remember what they are called but yours is missing the lid. Used to have a domed lid that hinges/pivots in the middle and opens into that gap on the one side. If that explanation makes sense.

Do you know if that is silver plated or bronze? Nothing on it is magnetic.

 

My guess would be silver plate that is all worn off.

Butter dish? I've got one, was dad's mothers.
Silver plate, domed lid, very similar.
I'll post pics...if & when I find it.
