IMG_2527.JPG This old antique oil painting is in an ornate gold frame with an art light. It depicts a lady presumably a farmer or farmers wife on a boat on a river in front of a thctahed roof barn with ducks on the water. The signature and stamp has faded mostly on the back and all that can be made out is "London.W". Any information on this would help either the date/artist etc. The size is 50cm Length and 36cm height. Stretched canvas.

Please, click the button to edit your post, and on the image, select full size rather than thumbnail.
This saves time for those who might want to respond.
    Thanks.

I would also like to see a picture of the back and closeup of the writing. The back can tell you so much more about a painting

IMG_2530.JPG IMG_2531.JPG As I said the back is very faded and all that can be made out is "London. W" Do you know anything about this painting?

Have you taken it out of the frame to see if there's a signature on the front? Where are you seeing "London" - on the stretcher?

it says London. W on the back of the canvas it's very faint! And it has been nailed into the frame.

    UPDATE
Removed the art from the frame and there is no signature on the bottom corners or around the edges it was definitely on the back where the fading is! If anyone has ANY information at all please let me know! Age/price/name etc

I think its a "sunday painter" and I wouldnt put much effort into researching it. Just my humble opinion.

Ahhh okays! Well in your opinion, with it being a good quality oil painting on stretched canvas, with the gold ornate frame and art lamp, measuring 50cm in width, 36cm in height, what do you think it would be worth?

it appears to be a home decor type painting. value wise maybe 50 to 100. depends on how bad someone wants it

The frame is worth more than the painting. Its pleasing ,but not really very good. Its not inconceivable that someone, way back when, dumped some money into getting beloved Grans painting framed.Im sorry,I wish I had better thoughts on it.

What rings false with me are how white the whites are on her apron and the ducks. Generally, over time, older paints yellow with age. Makes me wonder if it was an older painting that got "freshened up" along the line.

I adjusted the lighting and colour on the images so people could get a better view of the detail :) the paint has aged for sure

Ah right okay I'll look more into it then as it's just your opinion and on other sites people have had more to say! Also contacted an antique dealer too! Thanks anyway

Let's say it like this. If it was mines than I would not bother researching it. Not signed, quality is not that good and the subject is also not interesting. I would sell the work without framing and keep the frame for a better painting/project. Just my opinion.

Can you share with us what other people said on other websites? Or maybe the website links. All info helps to get the last piece of the puzzle.

zSigna.jpg Hi and WELCOME, Zac!! Sorry you didn't find out more about your painting!! Don't hesitate to post other things....there are many well versed antiquers here with a ton of expertise!!!!

I tried pulling something/anything out of the wording on the back of the canvas.....I don't necessarily see the word "LONDON, W"...... the third and fifth letters look like they have dots above them. I think I see a date "188?" under the second letter, but can't quite make out the wording above.....maybe someone else can see more............
