Am I some kind of dervish?? I ran this by my neighbor who knows a lot about Croatian and Eastern European costumes - she can't say it's in that neighborhood. She and her friend think possibly South American? Don't see that...

I just realized the eyes are much lower - I thought they were the yellow blobs. There are a lot of clear elements, any one of which could take you somewhere - I just can't match 'em all up!

    He/she has bare feet
Three corded "brushes" made from yarn
    A straw collar
The uplifted hand held something - I doubt it was a candle, it's not set vertically.

    Any Ideas??

I don't know what that is but I bet it will chase you down the hall at the stroke of midnight and use them corded brush thingies to throw around your ankles to knock you down and that hand is gonna be holding a knife as it looks like that arm is articulated!! :nailbiting: (Sorry, too many horror movies watched at night) :)

Wish I had time to look at that - I was thinking maybe Buddhist Black Hat or Cham Dance - they have similar hats and hold different things - but no bare feet.

I'm headed out to get a shingles shot :(

I believe he is Hanuman - and the swinging things are uttariya - or uthareeyam - a kind of scarf - I don't see where they are used in any way in the actual kathakali dance. He is a monkey, basically.

Here's a blog of the whole deal - very detailed

    KATHAKALI COSTUME STUDY AND ANALYSIS

if you search the above sentence, you'll find a pdf document of that information... I couldn't upload the pdf, too big.

    Thanks, @Debora !

You're best off using that search and selecting the pdf (if you want to save as a nice reference).

The author generated a number of links detailing the writing of the document - fsr, my link goes to a page i didn't visit.

    Sorry for any confusion :)
