Picked up this oil painting today and am trying to find some information about it. Painting is of a young girl standing in a kitchen, my first though was German or Austrian. There is a signature in the lower left hand corner, but I cannot make it out. Frame is marked Made In Germany. Painting measures 15 3/4" by 19 3/4".

She sure looks Mexican to me. I think the frame is what was made in Germany. Can you get a clearer shot of the signature ? I think shes adorable,id have bought it !

Thanks Johhny & Pat, I don't know why I did not see this as Mexican. Guess I did not think of a Mexican painting in a made in Germany frame. I will try to get a better shot of the signature, it is just difficult to see and photograph.

The work is very similiar to Labios, thanks for the link.

Found another painter with a similiar style.

Here is another picture of the signature that i tried to enhance a little bit. I still cannot read what it says though.

If the larger writing is a first name, it looks like it could possibly be "Carmen."

Looks to me line the two red "signatures" were applied with a rubber stamp or other such mechanical means. Could that mean the work is actually an oilene or similar manufactured repro? The red ink could be a trade name too. No idea, I'm flat-art-ignerunt.

I'm sure your painting was done by H.R. Rocha, the similarities to the others by him are unmistakeable. However due to the texture and the "stamped" signature or mfg logo I think it is a mechanical reproduction of an original. Try and find the original in a museum then you'll be sure. If by chance yours is an original it would have some good value. And remember I'm art-ignerunt so don't rely on my opinion.

Thanks everybody. The more I research this painting, the more I think it is not either of the artists in the links. In Labios paintings the faces were rounder and the eyes larger. In the Rocha paintings they are more detailed than the one I have and normally he included an animal in the painting. While I think the style is simliar and also probably from the same time period, it is a different artist.

In labios paintings, all of his little girls had lace collars. Id swear this was Labios,or a very good copy.

If it were mine, I'd explore further if it could be a Labios painting. One of his sold at Christie's for $1,800 in 2013. :)

That said, though, the signature doesn't look like Labios', so it may just be "in the style of"...

Found out the artist on this painting. Though I would give an update so that the information is available to anybody who wants it.

Lilia Carrillo ( 1930 - 1974 ) appears to have done some of the standard Mexican folk paintings early in her career before switching over to abstract.

Hm. The guy sure had a "formula" going, didn't he?

Any idea what those things are on the floor beside the girl in both pictures? That's been bugging me.
