**Edit: May not be oil. My husband told me it was oil but he could be very wrong**

    Hello everyone,

I bought this painting a few days ago at an auction because I absolutely loved the frame. The painting itself is nice, if not to my taste.

Ultimately I just wanted the painting for the frame and want to separate the two however I wanted to make sure this isn't something rare or valuable.

There are no markings besides a signature simply signed "Edwin"

My google-fu has brought me nothing. Husband says it is an oil painting.

I suspect it was a painting made by a budding artist who then gave it to a friend.

    You got me.
If it's oil it seems to be rather well done.
Don't forget that some frames are incredibly valuable on their own.

You know what- It could not be oil, I'm just taking my husbands word on it being oil. I don't actually know for sure! My first impression was that it was a print but he said otherwise and I don't know enough to argue with him.

It is a nice piece, just not something we would necessarily hang in our home.

Isn't the frame lovely! I should have taken a wider shot so it was shown more. There is a bit of damage but nothing terrible. $5! Couldn't believe no one else was bidding on it. My mother and best friend were fawning over it this weekend, asking me to sell it. hehe

Do do some research online about art surface textures and see what you can learn. :)

I seem to be doing nothing but researching antiques and such these days. It's been fun :)

There is a well known artist named Edwin Steele who does still life paintings. If you google his name you will find a bunch of his works. It seems like all of his paintings are hung in a similar style of frame. The one oddity is his work seems to be signed E. Steele almost every time. So it could be possible that this was an unsigned work and someone added Edwin to attribute to the artist. Of course it's also possible it was another artist entirely...

Likely a factory painting knocking off Edwin Steele. The quality is not there to be Steele's. Looks like oil (or acrylic) to me.
