On first inspection I see it's been gone over a good bit, stained interior, poorly refinished, etc. but couldn't find conclusive evidence it was chopped down. though I believe it is.
going to take closer look. wondering if anyone has seen one of this scale, and what your impressions of it might be. Unique enough for me to take a shot at it either way.
Noticing larger dovetails on smaller drawers compared to main drawer.

Yes, agree it is odd proportion wise, something isn't right. Are you sure it's American & not English?

Well, it's American then, little doubt about that.
Another oddity? that flower pot, have only seen that type inlay in Philadelphia pieces, it's unusual.

Usually on american federal pieces they are "urns" not "pots", pots are unusual except in philly/pennsylvania area.

Maybe it was custom made for a specific place ? Like a boat or train or the like. I love that size ,makes it unique.

I would have called this Hepplewhite.
The brasses look like they have been replaced, they look more like Duncan Miller.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

That's some serious damage/splitting on the top......

    Possible
Yep is, drawer pulls & legs/feet are Hepplewhite
Uh Huh, another "project" piece and, veneer work isn't cheap.

    I am leaning towards a style piece, I don't think it's period.
This should be in the furniture forum, you'd get more comments.
I wouldn't be here now except I was tagged as I rarely venture far from that forum.

Really out of my wheelhouse so nothing to add. Certainly an unusual piece with some age to it.

Agree, I think antique but probably not period.

Yes, it's lived a hard life, drawer interiors varnished, the top but also in looking at 1st pic it seems a lot of veneer has been replaced and the restorer struggled with the color matching and failed.
