    Hi,
I have this small vase, 3.75" tall, that I think is Oaxaca Barro Negro pottery. It has an incised number on the underside 3008/6. Is it indeed Oaxaca and can anyone suggest age or even possible maker?
    Thanks! Black-Pottery-Vase-0.jpg Black-Pottery-Vase-5.jpg

Is that a mold line running across the bottom?

Black-on-black pottery is usually assumed to be Southwest puebloan pottery, or from Mexico, but it is actually made in many other places in the world, also, like China, Tibet, Chile, Colombia, several countries in Africa, Portugal, and Romania, to name a few. And despite several internet sites claiming the process is a secret, it isn't. It simply is a result of the firing process, called "oxygen reduction," similar to raku.

Although the black pottery from Romania was originally hand-thrown on a potters wheel, it's entirely possible that some is mold-made today. Based on the form, the method of decoration (usually associated with Barrio Negro pottery, although some Romanian Marginea pottery often looks very similar), and the numbers on the bottom, which usually indicate Europen origin, I would think that this is Romanian, made in, or near, Marginea.

No, it's just an indent, made by hand

    Taupou,
Thank you for the info. I am totally unfamiliar with Romanian Marginea pottery, so will have a look around at some examples. I was thinking Oaxaca due to the feel and weight of the piece. I've been trying to find an example of Oaxaca with this motif but have not been successful. Thanks again for the help

I see a fair amount of Barro Negro around here and agree that the design and form on yours are not typical for Oaxaca.

Thank you! I've looked at some examples of the Romanian pottery that Taupou suggested, but don't see anything similar, at least not yet. So I'm wondering if it's of some other origin. I'll keep on searching, but I may not get a perfect match. At least I can eliminate Oaxaca based on your and Taupou's expertise, so thank you!

Thanks 2manybooks! Yes, I see the resemblance in the motifs and shape, so I can see how my example is almost surely Marginea. Thank you again for the photo!
