    Hi everyone,

I'm straying a little from the path because this item does not have to do with the Marshall House, but with me!

I found this photo of my grandmother and I'm a little confused...I think it looks like a nurse's uniform (notice the cloak and white cap) but she never told us she was ever a nurse. Could it be something else? Also, does anyone know what the letters S.N. mean on the collar?

My grandmother was born in 1925 so I think this is of the WWII era or postwar era. Any help would be much appreciated!

S.N. usually means STAFF NURSE (and occasionally, student nurse) as far as I recall.... And YES, that does look like a nurse's uniform!

She was very young there. 1940s from the hair style.

I have a picture of my grandmother wearing a white nurse-like dress with a "cap" sporting a red cross. And another of her mother (a closeup cropped from a larger picture) wearing a cap of the same kind. Since my grandmother's mother died in 1922, I have to assume they served in some kind of volunteer nursing organization during WWI, but neither of them had anything to do with nursing at any other time in their lives.

Your grandmother is lovely, Marshall House!

My dad was a kid during WWII, but he knitted socks at some point during the war. He never picked up a needle again afterward and I doubt he remembered how to do it by the time I came along in 1966. That's not even close to the same thing, but lots of people did jobs during the War having no relation to anything they did before or afterward.

Case in point... During World War II, my mother worked in a bomb factory. Hasn't made one since.
