I just picked this bowl up. Measures 13" across. The back has the Bremen(Germany) Town mark pre 1886. The rim says To Benedix Puvogel 1828. What would this bowl have been used for? There was a person born in 1829.. a magnet does not stick to the bowl bowl1.JPG bowl2.JPG bowl3.JPG bowl4.JPG bowl5.JPG

It may be pewter. Are you sure that says "To" and not some kind of title?

The middle letter is a g..I can see the tail. Anyone know the purpose of this bowl...why is the name on it?

As I said over on the ebay forum, this may be an abbreviation as a gift designation (From in German?) for a pewter offering plate. It is not uncommon for parishioners to give such gifts to the church and have their name and date of the gift inscribed. The abbreviation looks like Tgf: or Jgf: to me but I was not able to come up with anything that it logically stands for.
