    Hi,
Trying to find out information on this Norah Wellings doll. I thought swashbuckler but I'm not finding anything using that, he isn't the sailor - any ideas on what else to call him? He is 15" long.
    any information appreciated!
    thanks for looking.

Thank-you book! I never even thought about a pirate. Mine doesn't have a weapon or the belt/wrap thing though. The article says he should be 16" but I just re-measured and he is 15".

I see Book has already answered your query. Just to add to IDing, Gillian Trotter's Norah Wellings, Cloth Dolls and Soft Toys, p. 118, has a pic of the the pirate doll, only showing head and chest. Here is all that is says:

"Illustration 204. Novelty Doll, Pirate model K40: velvet character; brown painted features; painted hair."

The doll has the same hat, red head scarf, light blue to aqua coat with red lining, round brass buttons, and yellow shirt. It doesn't show enough to see if it has a red sash or weapons. It gives no measurements. The face color is very white rather than tan like yours.

Thank-you for the additional information Susan! I've noticed that the faces vary in colours on the dolls.

Just noticed that a full pic of the pirate doll is also on p. 72, Illustration 106. It looks like the same pirate doll Gillian Trotter posted on her Norah Wellings blog page that Book linked too. The full length pic has the doll holding a cutlass with a red sash around his middle. She says above the picture

"Three different pirates were also introduced. They came in two sixes: A 11 1/2in (29cm) and C 15in (38cm).

Here Trotter says under the pic, note she says **15 inches**:

"Pirate model K40 stands 15in (38cm) tall with a fearsome velvet character face and painted features. He has a velvet body and his plus four trousers, socks and shoes with buckle are an integral part of his body. He wears a felt coat with gold buttons and a yellow felt vest. He has matching art silk scarves around his waist, neck and head and has a felt four-corned hat. He carries a wooden cutlass."

Your other Norah Wellings' doll is pictured in Trotter's book also on p. 74, Illustration 110, in a group pic called "Novelty Dolls." Under the pic it says:

"Illustration 110. Page from a 1938 Norah Wellings catalogue shows military dolls and a Girl Guide and Boy Scout doll."

and down below the pic is written:

"A Boy Scout model 1143 and Girl Guide model 1144 (see illustration 110) both wore authentic English uniforms."

That is marvellous, thanks so much Susan. Glad to hear it was done in the 15" size, I must have measured it 5 times and it kept coming out at 15", lol!
I'll have to look for that book - I don't find them often but I do come across these dolls and books are always useful.
I saw a set of the girl guide and boy scout dolls that sold on ebay for a good amount, not sure what just the boy scout will fetch.
