    It looks like a drive shaft for something. How big is it? Is it iron (test with a magnet) or bronze?

    Well, it looks copper , so my 1st thought would be a water pipe...

    but..
    is it hollow
    where was it found
    what size is it

    Does the top end have a plumbing washer of some sort? It may be a valve for an exterior water source, set deep enough not to freeze. The square end would have fit a handle that could be turned.
