I found this at a estate sale today - I bought it because it was taboo; tobacco & German swastikas. But then the guy told me it was made around the turn of the century before the swastikas were associated with Hitler's nazis. - He told me that swastikas were actually considered good luck?!!

    Is that true?
Was this made pre WWII (so I can sell it on eBay)?

    I appreciate any info/thoughts!

The use of Nippon (the Japanese word for Japan) generally places this pre-1921, I believe. The "swastika" in this case had absolutely nothing to do with Germany or Nazis. This symbol has been used for a very long time by various cultures and does often reflect a wish for good luck.

I think the lid may be a replacement. The lids are usually porcelain & decorated like the jars.

A butter crock with the symbol....before Hitler.

I think the lid is a replacement. I believe it should have a lid the same as the base.

The US government built a bridge in Yuma, AZ in 1909 with decorative swastikas.

I found 1 other humidor with swastikas on liveauctioner but that's it - are they that unusual?
    I love the bridge!

Given that just using the word can trigger problems with eBay listings, I would imagine that most sellers would use another term for the decor to avoid issues. Try "tumbling log symbol."

I don't how close they are. These are the real and fake photos on that website. I just like to give people a heads up.

Here is close up of my mark - if 1/4" means space between HAND & PAINTED then mine appears correct - it definitely looks more like your correct one than the fake one

I interpreted the quarter-inch to mean the width of the main part of the leaf - from the left to the right side at about the next "point" above the one that sticks out to the left. A very odd way to measure, but Chervenka's illustration in the book has a black line to show where to measure and the online version doesn't.
