    Greetings!

I appreciate Peter's invitation to introduce myself here.

I became exposed to antiques at an early age, as a result of my father's hobby of visiting antique stores in the Midwestern US. I must admit that as a small child, I did not enjoy what seemed like endless hours in places that held no interest for me. As the years went by, however, I came to appreciate antiques not just for their intrinsic beauty but also for the historical associations and their links with the past.

What specifically brought me here at this time is that I am preparing to pass along to my niece and nephew a number of items that have been in the family for several generations. I am preparing some written information to go along with the keepsakes/heirlooms, with the thought that this will enhance the care and appreciation they receive. But I need help figuring out some of the background relating to certain items and thought I might be able to tap into some of the expertise here at this forum.

I can't quite figure out in which subforum to post my first query, so I will message Peter privately, lest I post inappropriately.

Thank you for your interest in my introduction!

    Dan

Welcome, Dan! We're so glad to help you in this project. So many things that get passed down are mysteries to the recipients - as they may have to the donor as well.

If an item or question doesn't seem to fit in one of the specific categories, the best thing to do is to place your thread in Antique Discussion. It's a bit of a catch-all, so you can't go wrong.

Hi Dan, you've already heard lots from me in some of the threads you've started.

Glad you are doing this. As Bakersgma said:
In the thread about where to look for unrecognized goodies, I mention occasionally feeling like a predator. Worst case is a cameo I knew was hardstone (agate), a portrait probably of a seller's forebear, signed by a cutter unknown to me, sold on eBay as a buy it now, not an auction. At the price of a tank of gas, it was a bargain knowing only that much. After receiving it, asked if they could give me any provenance for it. They (it came through seller's husband's family) were very generous with info, including a whole family history available on line.

Guilt increased when I learned the cameo came out of Berlin with a family fleeing rising Nazism. Only rose a little more when long after purchase connected the signature with someone who did work for the Imperial Prussian court.

    So, research, research, research!
