Never bought anything like this before but figured why not.
So pretty much have no clue what that is.
As for what seller told me it is ivory guaranteed or money back :)
Looks somewhat old but again no idea how old.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Size about 40mm height.

That is truly wonderful. I see there is an arch to attach to the sagemono rather than holes. It looks carved too. Wait for someone who knows something though.

I don't see any holes. Plus it would be useful to see the bottom.

    Has it been varnished?

    No idea.
How would you test for ivory?
Also it is pretty heavy for the size.

Found this on image search. Do you think it is in same category?

That's an interesting and different thought!!! And one "hole" IS larger than the other.....but have also never seen that before either........

Not in the same category, IMHO, as the comparison image you posted from Freeman's....which is much finer carving!!

I went to netsuke exhibit that had examples of clever netsuke designs.

AND Now I have no idea!!!!!!:jawdrop::rolleyes::rolleyes: I still don't think the carving is as fine as the first one you posted from Freeman's though!! Maybe the carving of Netsukes is changing over time????

Not a netsuke but an okimono, which is a small statue.
It looks like ivory to me, as komo said stained to look older. It is very likely post-CITES.
I'm sorry, not the same quality or age.

Same subject, but yours is probably younger.
I think it is the wrong kind of ivory, too recent.:(

What I am wondering whether tea staining or varnish would hide or obliterate Schreiger lines.

I think we haven't seen the right angle to see Schreger lines, but the other lines are there. I hope I'm wrong though, and it isn't ivory. The date is an issue, but won't be if it is bone.

So I took some close ups and performed hot needle test. Definitely not plastic. Maybe more detailed pics would help.

    The hot needle test..........:yuck::yuck::yuck::vomit:

We have railed against that for years....I guess since you've never acquired this sort of item, that you never noticed our warnings .....
    that said....it's your item......so jab away !!

imo....no siggy, newer item, ivory...tea stained to give it the appearance of age.
    not a netsuke..
