    Hi all.
My Mum has had this Toby Jug since she inherited it from her grandmother. It has no markings and it’s unpainted. I wonder if anyone in the community would be able to shed some light on it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. 5F93B8DB-20C2-422A-B6F9-AD21301545F6.jpeg 333CA8C7-515E-4B42-8264-75151EE8537F.jpeg 3B55F7EE-A5D9-450D-B50A-55FBADA9829B.jpeg C130D8FB-D96B-495F-9267-07443BC606AD.jpeg 46BB25AD-B4E8-4D1A-9771-2910A0F1BD52.jpeg

I like that he's wreathed with grapevine, as if he were Bacchus/Dionysus.

I don't think he is majolica.
    More of a salt glaze.
    Any marks on the pewter?
Probably English as bear said, but a chance he is German.
    Welcome to the board.

The one on Ebay might be majolica, but this isn't. It's sometimes called drab, but it's properly buff stoneware, relief moulded. It's very typical of mid 19th English ones.

Not sure what the one on WP went for, but sure looks like he has some significant 'issues' going on....to include what looks like a replaced handle, large chip in the bottom side and significant crack going down the visible side.....and he too is cute......but OP's is nicer.....I think!!!

    Hi Johnny 5,

Welcome! I'm a 40 yr toby collector. I must say, I never seen this particular toby before. Someone has mentioned Bacchus and I believe they are correct that this toby represents Bacchus. He is often represented with grapevines and grapes around his head on toby jugs. And there are jugs with hinged lids so although this is not the usual it is more on the rare side. Its seems to have cracks around his feet and in between his legs and right hand as if something happened during the drying process. It only occurred at the time of when it was being made not later. I agree he is English. I would say mid 1800s. It's hard to put a maker on him without a mark. The one from eBay, I would not call majolica even if it has a couple of barely there colors. They are both very similar. I do agree that it's stoneware as is the eBay one is.

It's a beautiful toby jug! Even with it's few flaws. It's very appealing!

    I hope I've helped!

Sorry, I posted the Worthpoint reference, but don't have access to the prices (cost of membership seems high) Regards - Joe

    Johnny,

Can you tell me how tall this toby is? It's hard to tell in the pictures. Then I might be able to give you a guesstimate on price. I've been at this so long now, that I'm good at figuring what time frame, country and rough guesstimate on value of a jug.
